CritterPet! is a "Desktop Pet" that has a good amount of personality, while also not getting in your way! It won't: Open random text and image files, Move your cursor, Close programs, Play noises, Lag your PC (hopefully), or anything else! (no hate to desktop goose or anything like it but i would never want it open while actually doing something)
